The Lions Tourney recognizes and pays tribute to Coach John Baumgarten, one of the shinning lights of San Diego High School Baseball. Coach Baumgarten quietly passed on April 11, 2021 after a short illness. Coach Baumgarten played for St. Augustine HS and USD. John won over 400 games at Hilltop including three CIF championships. For many years, Coach Baumgarten played a prominent role in the Lions Tournament as the architect of the brackets and the schedule making sure all teams involved would play in a competitive bracket with the opportunity to advance. John’s contributions to our tourney was a building block to what it is today. God Bless you Coach.
Once again, The Lions Tournament mourns another San Diego Coaching Legend who passed on late Saturday March 13, 2021. Cathedral Catholic and University of San Diego High School coach Dick Serrano died of natural causes.. Coach Serrano coached the Dons for 30 years winning numerous Lions Tournament titles as well as four CIF championships in 1972, 1978, 1980 and 1981. Coach Serrano retired with 549 baseball wins but thousands of wins for the athletes and students that he mentored. For many years, Coach Serrano allowed the Lions to BBQ on the Uni High campus outside his office for the early years of our traditional coaches party. Coach Serrano was a fine coach but also a great man. He will be missed.
REST IN PEACE COACH DENNIS PUGH
It is with deep disappointment and sadness that The San Diego Lions recognize the death of legendary coach Dennis Pugh of Mission Bay High School and California State University San Marcos. Dennis was an integral part of the Lions Tournament who chaired the Bracketing and Seeding meetings. Coach Pugh was the chief schedule maker for the Lions for the past twenty years. Dennis Pugh won 8 CIF San Diego Section titles and ranked third in victories (660) even with spending 10 years in the college ranks. Dennis Pugh was a special Coach and an even more special person. He will be missed.
IN HONOR OF COACH PUGH, THE LIONS TOURNAMENT OPEN DIVISION WILL BE DESIGNATED AS THE COACH DENNIS PUGH OPEN DIVISION
REST IN PEACE
CLASSICAL ACADEMY COACH RON SISLER
The Lions Tournament, along with the entire San Diego high school athletic community mourn the loss of Coach Ron Sisler who tragically died on August 27, 2020 when a tree branch fell on him while walking in the neighborhood. Ron Sisler was a great coach and mentor to students in the Escondido and Valley Center communities for many years. Coach Sisler guided the 2019 Classical Academy Caimans to runners up in the CIF San Diego section D-5 Championship. Coach Sisler was a good man and will surely be missed.
Rest in Peace
Mickey “D" Deutschman
West Hills High School Coach
It is with deep disappointment and sadness that The San Diego Lions recognize the death of legendary coach Mickey D has been a fixture in San Diego Coaching for the last 50 years. Mickey has coached at all levels, high school, Little League, college as well as Semi-pro.baseball.
Mickey scouted for the Atlanta Braves for over twenty years and has been inducted into the National Semi-Pro Hall of Fame Class of 2014. He also had his 1000th career win with the semi-pro San Diego Stars in 2013. He is now up to over 1060 career wins with the Stars organization. Many players have advanced on to the college ranks and professional ball through his efforts. Mick's statement of "a coach or managers reward is a players success" is truly heart felt.
